Pliva Lakes

In the immediate vicinity of Jajce, one of the most important cultural and historical gems of Bosnia and Herzegovina, lie the magical Pliva Lakes. As a protected national monument and a unique natural landscape, they proudly hold the title of the largest natural lakes in the country. Formed under the influence of tectonic forces, these lakes owe their present appearance to millennia of tufa (travertine) deposition on the Pliva River – the very same river that creates one of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls in the heart of Jajce.

A special historical and aesthetic value is hidden in the tufa barrier between the Great and Small Lakes, home to a picturesque array of wooden watermills, locally known as mlinčići. Although only one of them still grinds grain today, these centuries-old guardians of tradition remain the most recognizable postcard motif and an unmissable tourist attraction. With their well-maintained piers, hidden beaches, and pristine nature, the Pliva Lakes are a perfect oasis for relaxation, recreation, and sports adventures.In 1963, the Great Pliva Lakes hosted the 7th European and Extraordinary World Championship in Flatwater Canoe and Kayak Racing. The Pliva Lakes region is located approximately 160 km from Sarajevo International Airport and about 75 km from Banja Luka Airport, making it easily accessible to both domestic and international visitors.

The Public Institution “Agencija Jajce” (Agency for Cultural, Historical, and Natural Heritage and Development of Tourist Potential of the City of Jajce) actively supports the sustainable development of the Pliva Lakes region. By managing cultural assets, promoting local heritage, and encouraging sustainable ecotourism, the Agency ensures the preservation of the area’s rural identity and its harmony with the natural environment.
